COVERING THE “3” IN TRANSITION

Anyone who has officiated basketball for very long has found him or herself in the trail position busting their butt to catch up with a fast break when then ball handler pullsl up quickly and pops a three point attempt. Panic sets in immediately because the trail has no look at the three point arc. So, more often than not the trail guesses and marks a three.

The lead and the trail should recognize where the trail is when the shot goes up and either can offer help by marking the three or pointing to the floor to let their trail know the status of the shot.

The trail should slow down a second or two before marking and check the lead and trail to receive help.

If the trail marks and counts a three in transition and the center or lead can see clearly see that the shot was a two, the clock should be stopped and the correction made with the scorer.

In the video below the trail has no chance to get a good look at this transition three point shot. It doesn’t appear that the trail got any help on this shot but he may not of waited long enough to receive any. At any rate the shot missed and it was a moot point.
