Below is a good clip of an official who was caught by good ball movement in a position to be straight lined on a three point attempt. This official recognized his predicament, however, and moved quickly to ensure an open look on the shot.
Less active officials and those that don’t realize they are straight lined might have just stood still and officiated the play from a closed look.
If we as officials are looking at the back numbers of the player shooting the three ball we are closed. We want to be looking through the play, looking at shoulders to make sure we have the open look, the valid look.
“I call them like I see them,” and official told me once at camp. I say, “Call them like they happen.” And to do that officials have to have the best open look they can get.
